Spaceship Parking (and Beyond!), Sunday

The weekend, Liam felt, had been a pretty good success so far. Sure, Sarah hadn't really been up to anything involving crowds, but that was fine. There were plenty of things they could do that didn't involve lots of people.

Like go flying in Liam's shuttle. Sure, for three out of the four of them it was not actually a new experience, but Liam never got tired of flying and besides, this time it would be Verity behind the controls for the majority of the flight.

(And okay, he genuinely liked Antimony, but he had to admit that picturing her face when she found out that not only did Sarah get to go to space but she did so in a ship that Verity was piloting was pretty damn funny.)

Of course, just out of habit he headed right for the pilot's seat, but then stopped, shook his head, and settled in to the front passenger seat instead, twisting around to grin at Sarah and Renee. "I promise she's a more patient pilot than she is a driver," he said, mostly for Sarah's benefit since it wasn't like Renee had ever had to experience Verity on the road.

"I don't really care if it was the universe or fate or your alien father kicking you out of the afterlife," Renee rolled her eyes. "You came back."

"Verity, where did you want to go next?" Liam asked abruptly. Yeah, now he was the one executing an extremely subtle topic change.

"Somewhere they explain you don't have to be beholden to bullshit and that it doesn't affect your own achievements," Verity muttered.

"She said Saturn," Sarah reported with a small grin.

"Certainly what I heard," Renee said with a nod.

"Sounds fake, but okay."

Liam, you were picking up internet slang from the mice again.

"Would the three of us lie?" Sarah asked.

A Cuckoo asking that was almost laughable.

"We're far too cute to do anything like that," Verity added.

Just adding to the growing collection of untruths.

"We would never," Renee insisted.

Liam just rolled his eyes and sighed.

"Oh yes, that's right, paragons of truth, all of you," he grumbled.

"See? You are educable," Verity said with a cheerful smile. "At least about some things."

"This is when Artie would say, 'Shots fired'."

"Hmm," Renee hummed. "I think I'm going to have to meet this Artie someday. Make it happen, Kincaid." A beat. "Kincaid-Price," she corrected, with a little half-smile in Verity's direction.

"No promises," Liam said. "He's really more of an email and IM kind of guy." For reasons that he wasn't going to get into. "But maybe if you manage to come back to Earth for more than a weekend sometime, I can see about wrangling you an invite to a family thing." After all, she was his family, basically, and if he was a Price now too, well. Might be possible!

Sarah's expression went a little complicated at Renee wanting to meet Artie. Also for reasons.

"Oh, a comet!"

It was a family thing.

Verity just sighed. One day, these two. One day.

"Artie's like a much dorkier Street," she explained. "And wow, Liam. Just gonna throw her into the deep end of the pool like that? Even I was gentle."

“That’s impressive, considering how dorky Street is,” Renee snickered.

“I’m telling her you said that,” Liam shot back. “And as I remember it, the first members of your family I met after Sarah were your siblings. Unexpectedly.”

Granted Verity hadn’t been expecting them either, but still.

"Which is still better than being thrown into all of them at once!" Verity declared.

"You made us omelettes," Sarah said, remembering. Or viewing someone else's memories, one of those. "And Antimony kicked a chair at your face."

"I wish I'd been able to see that," Renee pouted. And then perked up. "Could I see that? Did someone get it on video?"

"Absolutely not," Liam shook his head at Renee.

"She's faced down an army of space vampires more or less solo," Liam informed Verity. "She'd do just fine."

"'Space vampires'," Renee rolled her eyes. "Don't let Yulyn hear you call them that."

"He absolutely agrees with me that it's an accurate description," Liam said smugly. "So there."

"Space vampires?" Sarah and Verity asked in the same time with the same inflection.

For once, it wasn't Sarah 'leaking' powers. Just raised a cryptozoologist, stay a cryptozoologist.

"I'm driving, take notes," Verity told her cousin.

"The- " Liam stopped himself before he let the species' true name fall from his lips. It had been years and it still felt almost blasphemous to say it, though he had used the name once in Verity's company. "Proto-species that became the Taelons and the Jaridians, millions of years ago, were capable of feeding off the energy of other beings."
