The last two days in the Kincaid-Price household had been, uh, interesting. First and most obviously, there was the appearance of some animal but not actually animal visitors. There had been Kestrel, of course, and then there'd been who had shown up claiming to belong to Verity:

"Jack."

"Your name is Jack."

"Yup"

"Jack the jackalope?"

"Yup."

The talking part of which wasn't even as startling as it might be for most. And that was because of the mice. Which led to the other really interesting thing: once they'd figured out that these animals- daemons- were in fact extensions of human souls, two schools of thought had immediately formed: those that believed the new arrivals needed to have names bestowed upon them so they could be properly worked into the canon, and those who believed that, as part of their gods, they were already covered, namewise.

That the daemons would likely disappear either tomorrow or in a few days, as is typical with Fandom, Did Not Matter, as it had been pointed out that They Have Always Been There, You Just Did Not Know It. Therefore, they would continue to exist once they've disappeared.

"For does NOT the Pilgrim Priestess search high and low for he God of Empty Rooms and Cold Regrets with no sign of him nor proof he still lives? Is not our entire life based around the faith of That Which We Feel But Can Not See?" remarked one of the acolytes early on in the discussion.

So that was the background noise as Liam (and Kestrel, who wasn't really much help per se but had Opinions) was in the kitchen, preparing some Ginataang Talong with some Deep Fried Cauliflower on the side. The eggplant had finished simmering and now it was just a matter of waiting for the deep fryer to finish as they waited for their guests.

"That at least makes sense!" Verity said. "Jack is just...lazy! Lazy and uncreative!"

"Ahhh," Liam said knowingly, as the pieces fell into place. "I get it."

"Don't you psychoanalyze me," Verity muttered, but in a way that meant 'unless you can do so in a way that will comfort me.'

"I certainly don't think you're lazy and uncreative," he informed her. "But I think you're used to hiding just how competent you are, a lot of the time."

"What are you talking about?" Verity asked. "I'm out there being hypercompetent! Kicking ass in heels and tiny dresses!"

"When you were dancing professionally, it wasn't even under your real name," Liam reminded her, his voice gentle. "And let's say we weren't living here in Fandom, but we got a nice little apartment somewhere in Baltimore. You wouldn't exactly feel comfortable with the neighbors knowing just how often you used the window for a door, hm?"

"...No," Verity admitted. Huffily.

"I'm not the only one in this relationship who's used to hiding parts of themselves," Liam told her, tilting her chin up for another kiss. "But I see you, love. All of you. Remember that."

Verity's kiss still started off a little sulky, but it didn't last long and when they pulled away, she was giving him an adoring look.

"I love you."

“Enough to help me with the eggplant?” Liam asked, giving her a wide-eyed hopeful look.

"Not even a little bit," Verity told him with a smile. "I'll keep you company though?"

“I’ll take it,” Liam said, grinning back at her. “But that means you don’t get to complain next time I bug you about your cooking skills,” he added, knowing full well this wouldn’t stick at all.

"I'm just trying to keep you from feeling bad when my awesome culinary skills leave you in the dark," Verity lied.

While trying to steal a chunk of cauliflower.

“Hey!” Liam protested, swatting at her hand. “Those are for dinner!”

"I am your wife," Verity informed him. "Half of them belong to me."

"Fine," Liam replied. "Then I reserve the right to tell Danny and Steve why the bowl's already half-empty when we're just sitting down for dinner."

"They should have thought of that before not being here sooner," Verity announced.

"That just leaves us more time for the really important things," Liam reminded her.

"Convincing Jack not to encourage the mice?" Verity asked hopefully.

"I was gonna say makeouts, but sure, we can go with that instead," Liam nodded.

"Last time we did that, you burned dinner and somehow that was my fault," Verity sniffed.

...She knew what she'd done.

"Fine," Liam retorted. "No more kisses for you, then." A beat. "Or cauliflower."

"Hey!" Verity protested. "Thems my rightful property!"

"The kisses or the cauliflower?" Liam had to ask.

"Yes," Verity replied.

She could make that joke only because Liam knew she didn't mean it at all.
