MHA #6, Sunday Evening

The last two days in the Kincaid-Price household had been, uh, interesting. First and most obviously, there was the appearance of some animal but not actually animal visitors. There had been Kestrel, of course, and then there'd been who had shown up claiming to belong to Verity:

"Jack."

"Your name is Jack."

"Yup"

"Jack the jackalope?"

"Yup."

The talking part of which wasn't even as startling as it might be for most. And that was because of the mice. Which led to the other really interesting thing: once they'd figured out that these animals- daemons- were in fact extensions of human souls, two schools of thought had immediately formed: those that believed the new arrivals needed to have names bestowed upon them so they could be properly worked into the canon, and those who believed that, as part of their gods, they were already covered, namewise.

That the daemons would likely disappear either tomorrow or in a few days, as is typical with Fandom, Did Not Matter, as it had been pointed out that They Have Always Been There, You Just Did Not Know It. Therefore, they would continue to exist once they've disappeared.

"For does NOT the Pilgrim Priestess search high and low for he God of Empty Rooms and Cold Regrets with no sign of him nor proof he still lives? Is not our entire life based around the faith of That Which We Feel But Can Not See?" remarked one of the acolytes early on in the discussion.

So that was the background noise as Liam (and Kestrel, who wasn't really much help per se but had Opinions) was in the kitchen, preparing some Ginataang Talong with some Deep Fried Cauliflower on the side. The eggplant had finished simmering and now it was just a matter of waiting for the deep fryer to finish as they waited for their guests.

"That's a really good way to get things to explode around here," Verity noted wryly. "By betting it won't."

The island loved dramatic irony.

"Also if there's a meth lab in the popcorn machine I will concede that it probably deserves to be exploded again," Liam added.

"I think we'll have bigger problems on our hands if that happens," damny replied dryly.

This wasn't rural Missouri. Mobile meth labs shouldn't be a thing here.

"What animal would be small enough to turn the popcorn machine into a meth lab?" Steve wondered, finishing his wine.

"Have you met the squirrels?" Verity asked.

Look, this summer had been an eye-opening adventure.

"I don't think I've ever been so trashed."

"I don't think our kitchen has ever been so trashed," Liam countered, his tone dry.

"Try to avoid them, honestly," Danny admitted with a concerned look.

"They make flags," Jo chimed in, pausing her need to groom Kailani within an inch of her life. "It's weird."

"Very glittery," Kailani added lazily. "They're very enthusiastic about something."

Oh look. Verity's wine needed more drinking right at that moment.

...She may have helped make a few flags over the summer. She'd introduced the concept of sequins.

“Squirrels are strange and mysterious creatures sometimes,” Liam said placidly. In the absence of something to drink he was just going to take a bite of some eggplant right about now.

"Mostly drunk." Thank god he'd never ended up as a broadcaster.

"I still get stuck on how they can hold a pencil," Steve admitted.

He got more stuck on that idea depending on how much he drank wine.

"I want to know who is supplying the squirrels with squirrel-sized outfits..."

Verity trailed off.

Verity turned a horrified face towards the closed door of the guest room.

Jack started snickering.

“This explains so much,” Liam remarked, biting back a snicker.

At least they hadn’t gotten in to Verity’s dance outfits?

... Yet.

Fear the day the squirrels eschewed their current garb for an excess of sequins. Fear it.

"Oh, so the glitter is your fault," Danny said, like the sweet, summer child he was.

"The fedoras are cute, though," Steve said supportively.

"Oh no," Verity said immediately. "The glitter predates my time on the island. I did not bring that curse with me."

“Pretty sure the machine under the island is actually powered by the stuff,” Liam commented.

Danny and Steve totally knew about that, right? It was in the reports from last summer and everything!

No, that was the sort of thing that should probably be shared outside of a report.

"What?" Danny said ~~probably mirroring Steve's expression perfectly~~ squinting and tilting his head a little.

"What?" Steve said at the same time with the exact same expression.

"Oh lord," Verity groaned, reaching for her wine again. "Please tell me you're both not 'too macho' or whatever to do the reading."

WHEN YOU DIDN'T DO THE READING, PEOPLE DIED.

Yeah, this was part of why Liam was taking Jesse's idle musing about a handbook to heart.

"They clearly have not," Liam said, shaking his head. "I'm disappointed, guys. No dessert for you."

Ignore the fact that they'd brought the cookies.

"I'm sorry, what?" Because that was a leap in logic even for here!

"I like reading!" Steve said. "There's just a lot. I was going alphabetically and haven't gotten to glitter. I'm at, um, dinosaur invasion."

"If you go hunting for basilisks and end up fighting cockatrices, you're gonna end up petrified with the wrong antivenin to save you," Verity said, as if that was a fully clear explanation.
