Liam had made plans with Kaidan and Verity to go on something of a joyride today, so he'd shown up at the junkyard early to give himself time to do an extra-thorough pre-flight check.

The virtual glass shimmered and became permeable as the shuttle recognized his biometrics, and he sat down in the pilot's seat and brought up the HUD.

ID core, optimal; conventional drive, optimal; weapons, optimal; communications, online; backup controls, online... everything seemed to be in working order. Now he just needed his passengers.

"And, no offense?" Verity said, "But Rosa's got more weapons than you. So if it comes down to brass tacks on who's really doing the heavy lifting as far as the non-anarchy thing goes..."

Liam raised an eyebrow.

"And how would you know just how many weapons Rosa has?"

Liam would point out that he had not been the one to get maimed by any drunken raccoons, except that this was SP and that hadn't actually happened yet.

"Radio is a tattle-tale," Verity said because she'd barely had a conversation with her neighbor ~~since plot has eaten my time and plans to do a back yard cookout, fail me~~. "Besides, while I'm usually biased towards the person with the highest number of sharp objects, I've actually seen what you can do in a combat situation."

...That wasn't a dreamy smile there, shut up.

"So I'm pretty sure I'd still put money on you being the one to keep us all safe."

"Oh," Liam said, visibly relaxing. Look, he knew where Verity kept her weapons, after all...

Plus, he'd never in a million years admit it, but 'You were handed this job and aren't actually qualified' was one of those things that could still get under his skin.

Verity frowned, a little confused, then her eyes softened and she leaned forward, resting her forehead against his.

"You never have to prove anything to me," she said softly, for his ears only. "You saved Carol. You saved me. I know what you're capable of and there's no one I trust more on that stupid, crazy island."

Liam would always have something to prove, even if it was to himself. It was just part of who he was.

"That's true," he agreed, cracking a slight smile. "Bet Rosa hasn't helped take down any snake cults." A beat. "At least, not around here. Maybe back in New York, though." New York seemed like the kind of place where a snake cult might flourish.

Yeah, it really did, didn't it? Weird.

"Well then the New York cryptozoologists can be very impressed by her," Verity said, stealing a kiss. "But I'm a Baltimore girl for now."

And even just a few months ago, Liam might have found that 'for now' cause for worry, a reminder that Verity wasn't sticking around Fandom forever. Now, though? Now that didn't matter so much.

"Baltimore, Portland, hell, even if you wind up in, I don't know, Montana somewhere. I'm always gonna be your backup."

"Nah," Verity said. "You're always gonna be my partner."

"That does have a much nicer ring to it, I have to admit." Liam replied, grinning.

Verity winked at him. "But you'll still watch my backside, right?"

Liam's gaze drifted slowly to the backside in question.

"Naturally,"

It was an extremely nice backside, after all.

"Then we're in agreement," Verity said, reaching out to hold his hand. "I'll watch yours and you'll watch mine."

"Seems fair," Liam said, smiling down at their linked hands. It was strange; the thought of anyone else doing so still seemed like an invasion of... personal space, privacy, whatever you wanted to call it. But Verity's touch always just felt right. "I am Sheriff Nice Ass after all." A much better name than Officer Could Be Worse, thank you very much.

"Can confirm," Verity said, waggling her eyebrows at him. "If you're Sheriff Nice Ass, then who am I?"

"Pilot-in-Training Fantastic Legs?" Liam suggested, after thinking about that for a moment.

"I'd respond to that," Verity said with a thoughtful nod. She stretched her legs out to show them off to Liam. "Best feature, yeah."

"I'm pretty hard-pressed to pick a favorite," Liam admitted. "But those're up there."

"I have a suggestion or two," Verity said, giving him a smile of pure wickedness.

"Oh yeah?" Liam said, with an answering smirk. And a darting glance over at the shuttle's other passenger.

"Come by my place after the flight and I'll tell you all about them," she said, overly innocent.

Oh hey, were their hands still clasped? Gee, Verity sure hoped Liam wouldn't pick up anything untoward.

Really, it was unfair just how good Verity was getting at the whole Sharing thing.

"I look forward to hearing about them," he said, keeping his tone conversational.

The feelings he sent along with the words, though? Were anything but.

Her heartbeat sped up and her pupils dilated. She had to clear her throat and shift in her seat. "Well, I'm glad we have dinner plans then," she said, trying to sound unbothered.
