MHA #6, Monday Afternoon

The island was being weird again. Because of course it was. Though at least this latest bout of weirdness seemed... relatively benign?

It hadn't actively interfered with any of Liam's usual morning routines, anyway. So that was good, he supposed. And now that it was a bit later in the day and he could be reasonably certain the person on the other end would actually be awake, he dialed a certain number on his Global. There were a couple of things he needed to take care of.

It rang once, twice, and then...

"Heyyyyyy, hot stuff!" the redhead on the other end chirped at him as the video feed connected.

"Street," Liam grinned. "It's been a while."

"Yeah, well," she shrugged. "Who's fault is that?" she asked pointedly. Because it was absolutely Liam's fault, yes.

"Point taken," Liam acknowledged. "Listen, I need-"

"A favor," Street chorused with him in unison. But she didn't look put out or anything, just amused. "You know, only giving me a ring when you need something is a guaranteed way to give a girl a complex. But what do you need?"

She listened attentively as Liam outlined just what it was he needed her to do, nodding occasionally.

"Shouldn't be too hard," Street said finally. "I'll let you know when everything's good to go. And- just 'cause this isn't your home anymore, doesn't mean there's not people who love you here, you know?" ... Though by 'people', she mostly meant 'her', since everyone else Liam cared about was either dead or off exploring space. "Maybe try calling more often?"

"Yeah," Liam said, smile turning soft around the edges. "I'll do that, Street. Thanks again."

With a wink and a little wave, Street shut off the connection on her end. Liam slid the Global closed and pocketed again. Now all he had to do was let Verity know things were in motion.

I would like to report some trespassers.

He sent a picture of the compies in the tea shop and also the remains of the giant centipede.

There's a lot of that going around. Need a hand?

He could always send out some Troopers. Or swing by the place himself.

Do they make glue traps for giant bugs??

Hernando was not having the best day ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if T&C had some, honestly.

Given some of the structural changes that had apparently happened overnight in addition to the new flora and fauna, it made sense that the stores might stock products that could potentially be useful in this weird prehistoric-jungle-ish version of the island.

There were noises coming from the spare bedroom where the mice lived. Sounds of battle, then a loud reptilian wail, and then cheering.

Verity came into the kitchen, face in her hand. She needed coffee. Stat.

"On the bright side," Liam said cheerfully, "They've had a lot of cheese and cake lately, changing things up with some reptile is probably for the best."

"Just remember that when they come out yelling, streaked in blood and gore," Verity mumbled. It was afternoon and yet she was still tired. Probably because of all the yelling from the next room.

“If the alternative is letting prehistoric lizards run rampant in our home...” Liam shrugged. Look, Verity, he was bound and determined to look on the bright side of... whatever this was, okay?

Of course, he was also going to get up and head over to the kitchen, because he knew an ‘I need coffee’ face when he saw one, and we all knew who brewed a better pot in this house.

It helped he was awake enough to make it, rather than Verity's exhausted, 'I'm gonna put in as much coffee as will fit' method.

"So...why are we somewhere prehistoric lizards can invade our house?" she asked.

Liam raised an eyebrow. "I feel like you know the answer to that just as well as I do," he pointed out. The answer being, of course, 'because Fandom'.

Being that it was the middle of the afternoon, he was forgoing tea for himself in favor of a smoothie. And not some sugary-sweet Jamba Juice concoction, here. This thing was full of like... vegetables. And vitamins.

She knew the answer, she just didn't want it to be the answer. Because that meant that this was going to continue.

"And it's hot," she complained, pulling her hair up off her neck. "The humidity is off the charts."

"Feel free to take off as many layers as you need," Liam suggested mildly. "... Should I be making cold brew?" he asked, after a moment of consideration.

"Ooooh, yes, I love you," Verity said, pulling the bottom hem of her shirt through the collar to keep her midrift bare. "Are you perving on me, Liam Kincaid?"

Lucky for her, when he'd gotten up at absurdly-early-o'clock that morning and noted how warm it was already, he'd decided that cold brewing might be worth experimenting with.

Sure, the grounds in the fridge hadn't been steeping for quite twelve hours, but it was better than hot coffee? And if it failed miserably, he was totally willing to go get some sort of iced monstrosity from the Perk.

"When am I not perving on you, Verity Price?" he retorted, as he set about filtering the grounds from the water.

"That actually reminds me," Verity said, a bit of seriousness trickling into her voice. "We really need to have A Talk."

She'd learned how to pronounce capital letters from the mice.

"... We do?" Liam turned, eyes meeting hers and his brow creasing in worry with maybe a dash of panic. "About what?"

Verity hopped up onto the counter next to the coffee machine, looking solemnly at Liam. "About what's going to happen the next time you accidentally get an analgesic and come after me all big eyes and wandering fingers." She wrapped a leg around his waist and tugged him in. "I'm tired of having to push you away because you're high and we haven't talked about it yet."

"Oh," Liam said, visibly relaxing. Not that this wasn't an important thing they needed to discuss, it's just that his mind had immediately gone through all sorts of terrible scenarios, each one more unlikely than the last. "That. You know I trust you, right?" He figured that was a good place to start.

"I should hope so," Verity teased. "You go to sleep next to me and a whole lot of weapons, after all."

"It's more than that," Liam insisted, though he did grin in acknowledgment of her statement. "I mean, that first time, after the sewer-lizards? If it had been anyone else, I would've bolted as soon as I realized what was going on."

"Dangerous to let anyone see you like that," Verity said, understanding.

"Anyone who wasn't you," Liam confirmed. He reached up one hand to cup her cheek. "You've seen all of me. And never once flinched, or ran away, or threatened to use it against me..." that wasn't anything he could say about anyone else who knew the truth about him; even those he considered the closest thing he had to a family.

She tugged him in and kissed him. "Hell no," she said. "The only thing I ever ran away from was how much and how fast I fell for you, because I wasn't quite ready to admit it."

"Didn't run very far," Liam pointed out. "'Cause here we are," he murmured, resting his forehead against hers.

"Of course not," Verity said, eyes closing. "I was nervous, not stupid."
