MHA #6, Friday Evening

So last Valentine's Day, Verity had made a valiant attempt at a romantic dinner. It... well, the evening had ended well, though the dinner itself had been a lost cause.

This time, Liam was determined to pull off the dinner part of the evening successfully, and to that end had temporarily banished her from the apartment, because last year there hadn't even been sex pollen adding an extra layer of difficulty to the endeavor.

Though it had been nearly a month, the smell of cooking meat still made his stomach churn, so there had been a lot of vegetarian meals happening. Tonight was no exception, and as soon as the eggplant parmesan was out of the oven, he texted Verity to let her know it was safe to come home.

“Oh, now I’m getting changed in the stairwell?” Liam asked, eyes wide. “What if someone sees?”

Was he teasing now too? Maybe.

"Then you'll have to arrest yourself for indecent exposure," Verity replied, waggling her eyebrows.

...Did anybody even live on their floor?

No, but Rosa lived on the floor below theirs, soooo... awkward. Potentially.

“You gonna come bail me out then?”

Not if she were at the station. Or if he just changed on their floor.

It wasn't like Rosa came up to chat and visit with them, after all.

"Mmm...maybe I'll be making a citizen's arrest instead," Verity said. "With handcuffs."

“I dunno,” Liam said, trying to sound casual, “I don’t think you’d need to resort to handcuffs.”

"Who said you'd be the one who ended up in them?" Verity asked with a little tsk. "You really gonna let me usurp your aheriffly authority like that?"

Even all hopped-up on sex pollen, Liam didn’t quite understand the appeal of handcuffs.

Still... “You can usurp whatever you’d like of mine.”

Oh god, Liam, that was terrible.

Verity ended up laughing about it though. Probably because of the sex pollen.

"I'm sure I can think of a couple of things."

“Yeah?” Liam grinned. “Like what?” He pushes his now-empty plate to the side so he could lean towards her direction.

Verity couldn't help but smirk a little bit, leaning back in her chair while her fingers played along the neckline of her shirt.

"Come here and maybe I'll show you."

Liam’s gaze dropped, focusing on the path her fingers were making along her neckline.

And then he was getting out of his chair to go and stand behind her, hands sliding down to cover hers.

“Show me,” he bent down to murmur the words in her ear. “Please.”

"I thiiiiiink...maybe we should clear the table first," Verity said, a bit of regret in her eyes. Cleaning up was literally the last thing she wanted to do. "Trust me. It'll be worth it."

“I guess,” Liam grumbled, with a trace of a whine in his voice. He bent down to drop a kiss on her shoulder before moving to start the cleaning up.

"If you want to be fucked over the table again, we need to clear the food off," Verity told him, watching to see his reaction at being told so plainly what she had in mind.

Liam went very still for a moment, and then redoubled his efforts at clearing off the table and packing the food up.

One year, maybe, they’d manage ‘sit down and eat a romantic Valentine’s day dinner’ but... they had a lifetime to make that happen. Liam had no complaints if this was the alternative.

You know, when they were old and had kids and maybe when there wasn't a bucketload of pollen in their lungs.

"That's about what I thought," Verity said, smug, getting a sponge to wash off the top of the table.

“You do know me pretty well,” Liam conceded as the last of the leftovers made it into the fridge.

"Well enough to know that you're going to want to go and fetch me a few things while I take care of the mice," Verity said, using that deep, slow, authoritative voice that Liam liked.

She gave him a list of things to get from the bedroom - things like their toy and the lube, and a few other handwavy for later things - and told him exactly how she wanted them set up when she got back.

And then pushed him gently against the wall to give him a kiss full of promise.

You know. As incentive.

Liked was something of an understatement, her words sending a current of desire right to his core.

He kissed her back fiercely, not quite willing to part just yet.

And yet Verity pulled away anyway, because sometimes you had to take to give. "Later," she told him, fighting against the need that was screaming at her to go back. "When you've been good and did everything I asked of you."

The sound Liam made as she did so was soft and desperate and full of need. But off he went to the bedroom as ordered, gathering everything she’d requested.

He returned to the kitchen, arranging everything just so as he waited for her to return.

And Verity took the decadent chocolate cake that was waiting in the section of the fridge that was not for her and Liam's use to bring into the mice's room. "Okay!" she announced, holding the cake high in the air. "It's Valentine's Day as well as the week of--"

"The Festival of Oh Harder I Need You!" a mouse cheered.

Verity was just going to wince at that and pretend like she hadn't heard it. "Stay here," she said. "And once Liam and I return to the bedroom and shut the door, you may order delivery. There is cash on the side table."

"HAIL!"

"Hail and be silent," Verity said, setting their cake down and closing the door firmly.

And then back to the kitchen, where Liam had set up everything--"Perfect."

There was no denying the effect that one little word had on Liam as his gaze met hers, pupils blown with desire.

"Yeah?"

However had it taken her so long to realize what this was?

"Exactly like I asked," she said, voice warm with approval. "You deserve a reward."

That Liam himself had been absolutely clueless likely hadn’t helped any.

“What,” he swallowed, “what did you have in mind?”
