29 Chimera Court, Wednesday Morning

When Liam had gone to sleep the night before, he'd been a child. He knew, on some level, that something had gone wrong, because his instructions from his father when he'd been born hadn't involved spending any time as a child, and yet there he was. He hadn't been overly concerned about it, in any case.

Still, when he woke up this morning and noticed that he seemed to be taller, his limbs longer... well. It was a relief.

Until he looked in the mirror and saw a face staring back at him that still seemed kind of childlike. Older, yes, but too young to infiltrate Companion Services and fulfill his destiny. That was... troubling. Perhaps human DNA interacted oddly with Kimera DNA? Liam had no idea, and it wasn't as if there was anyone around he could ask.

He figured he ought to just make the best of it, starting with finding some breakfast.

That was fine. It was a perfectly good question.

"Challengin' themselves is fun," Reno offered. "Keeps 'em quick, keeps 'em on their toes and ready for anything. Bonus points if they can catch the egg so they don't have to clean it later. Plenty of reasons, yo. It all depends on what people make of it."

"I don't think I have time for fun, myself," Liam said, sounding a little regretful. "But I guess that's okay for other people."

OH NO, NEW ROOKIE LIAM. DO NOT SAY THESE THINGS.

"You got time to talk about not havin' fun, you got time for fun," Reno replied, staring at the boy, just slightly scandalized. "Shit, I had one of them full-time-death-do-we-part type jobs right up until the world went to shit, and I had time for fun, yo. You gotta make your own fun, or there ain't much goddamn point to even bein' here."

Well, now Liam was even more confused. “But I know my purpose for being here,” he pointed out. “And 'fun' isn’t it.”

And now Reno was blinking and squinting a little before kind of pointing at the floor.

"Here, like, here on the island here?"

Just to be sure.

"No," Liam said, shaking his head. Because yeah, he actually didn't know why he was here and not in DC, just that every time he started to wonder why that was, something happened that seemed to distract him from really thinking about it. "But I know why I was created."

Not born.

Well. That got Reno's attention to snap to Liam like a breaking rubber band. His outward demeanor didn't change, but the Turk in his brain was on high alert, now.

They had a history, where he was from, with people who had been made instead of born.

"Oh? An' why's that?"

Well, technically speaking, he had physically been born... just in a much shorter time span than should have been possible.

"To prevent the extinction of the Taelon and Jaridian species." Which he would not be successful at, because Ha'gel's plan had not taken in to account how stubborn and prideful the remaining members of said species would be.

"Yeah?" Reno tilted his head a little, regarding Liam curiously. "What're those?"

"Aliens," Liam said, as if it should be obvious. The Taelons had been on Earth for several years now, after all.

Aliens kinda gave Reno the heebies.

"Huh," was his only reply, though. "Fair enough. An' you aren't allowed to enjoy doin' your job?"

His job involved eventually dying in a last-ditch attempt to save said aliens (he got better). So... no?

"No," he shook his head. "I don't think so." Right now, he was still kind of concerned by the fact that his body had stopped growing. Spending time as a teenager had not been part of his father's plan.

Reno stared at him for a long few seconds. And then he walked across the kitchen, grabbed an egg from the carton, and marched right back over to Liam.

"Hold out your hand."

Liam did so slowly, narrowing his eyes in suspicion at Reno. What was going on?

"Okay," Reno said, lifting his chin a little. "Now tell me, is there anything at all that's annoyed you, even a little bit, since you woke up this mornin'?"

Did 'not being an adult yet' count?

"Yes." Liam decided it did.

"Is it somethin' you can throw somethin' at?"

[firstofitskind]

Liam considered that. He could throw an egg at himself, he supposed. But then he'd be covered in raw egg.

"No."

[raspberryturk]

Reno sighed.

"Step outside with me for a minute, Rookie," he said, already starting for the door.

So friggin' help him, Liam, you were gonna throw that egg.

"... 'Rookie'?" Liam echoed.

[raspberryturk]

"You're new," Reno replied, by way of explanation.

He meant 'to life around Reno,' mostly. But he wasn't wrong, either, was he?

"That's true," Liam had to admit.

"So c'mon," Reno said, because he'd clearly won that one, "you're gonna throw that egg at somethin', dammit."

It was the hill he was willing to die on, apparently.

"Okay," Liam said, still sounding somewhat dubious but following Reno to the door nonetheless.

Reno stepped outside, and then looked around for a moment. Something... something that Liam wouldn't be pissed about egging later, maybe.

He pointed at a nearby tree.

"Think you can hit that from here? Don't throw it yet, just answer, yo."
