Spaceship Parking & Beyond, Sunday Afternoon

Liam had made plans with Kaidan and Verity to go on something of a joyride today, so he'd shown up at the junkyard early to give himself time to do an extra-thorough pre-flight check.

The virtual glass shimmered and became permeable as the shuttle recognized his biometrics, and he sat down in the pilot's seat and brought up the HUD.

ID core, optimal; conventional drive, optimal; weapons, optimal; communications, online; backup controls, online... everything seemed to be in working order. Now he just needed his passengers.

"Or something," Liam echoed, with a smile of his own. "It's a date."

"Maybe we'll actually get to the activity part of this date, even," she teased.

Doubtful, but, you know. It was good to have goals.

"I suppose that depends on how serious you are about learning to fly," Liam teased back.

Either outcome was fine by him, but if she genuinely wanted to learn to pilot the shuttle, he could manage to keep his hands to himself long enough for her to do so.

"Oh, I'm serious about learning," Verity assured him. "I'm just also okay if it takes a few more lessons than would otherwise be necessary." Her fingers twined with his and she brought his knuckles up to her lips. "But I really do wanna fly."

A slow, easy smile crossed Liam's face at the sensation of Verity's lips ghosting across his knuckles.

"Guess we'll have to work at not getting too distracted, then," he decided. "Seems like a fair compromise."

"Or we plan enough time that we can get distracted and still learn afterwards," Verity suggested. "Some flying, a little break, some more flying...."

"Oh, I like the sound of that," Liam agreed.

"I mean, look at this all," she said, her eyes going out to the stars and her expression taking on a hint of wonder. "You can't beat this view."

"As fond as I am of Earth, it really is something else up here," Liam agreed. "It'll be winter soon," he continued, seemingly out of nowhere. "And trust me, you haven't seen the aurora borealis until you've seen it from orbit."

"I've never seen it," Verity admitted. "Never been that far north. So it looks like it's up to you to show them to me."

"I think I could pencil you in," Liam grinned. ~~Because the player forgot time of year had already been mentioned in the previous ping, bah~~

"You sure I won't be taking up too much of your time, Sheriff?" Verity asked.

"Given how the island is such a hotbed of crime?" Liam deadpanned.

Did you want drunken raccoons, Liam? Because that was how you got drunken raccoons.

"You're pretty much the one man standing between us and complete anarchy," she deadpanned right back.

"The one man, yes," Liam agreed. "Because Rosa's there holding the line too."

"And, no offense?" Verity said, "But Rosa's got more weapons than you. So if it comes down to brass tacks on who's really doing the heavy lifting as far as the non-anarchy thing goes..."

Liam raised an eyebrow.

"And how would you know just how many weapons Rosa has?"

Liam would point out that he had not been the one to get maimed by any drunken raccoons, except that this was SP and that hadn't actually happened yet.

"Radio is a tattle-tale," Verity said because she'd barely had a conversation with her neighbor ~~since plot has eaten my time and plans to do a back yard cookout, fail me~~. "Besides, while I'm usually biased towards the person with the highest number of sharp objects, I've actually seen what you can do in a combat situation."

...That wasn't a dreamy smile there, shut up.

"So I'm pretty sure I'd still put money on you being the one to keep us all safe."

"Oh," Liam said, visibly relaxing. Look, he knew where Verity kept her weapons, after all...

Plus, he'd never in a million years admit it, but 'You were handed this job and aren't actually qualified' was one of those things that could still get under his skin.

Verity frowned, a little confused, then her eyes softened and she leaned forward, resting her forehead against his.

"You never have to prove anything to me," she said softly, for his ears only. "You saved Carol. You saved me. I know what you're capable of and there's no one I trust more on that stupid, crazy island."

Liam would always have something to prove, even if it was to himself. It was just part of who he was.

"That's true," he agreed, cracking a slight smile. "Bet Rosa hasn't helped take down any snake cults." A beat. "At least, not around here. Maybe back in New York, though." New York seemed like the kind of place where a snake cult might flourish.

Yeah, it really did, didn't it? Weird.

"Well then the New York cryptozoologists can be very impressed by her," Verity said, stealing a kiss. "But I'm a Baltimore girl for now."

And even just a few months ago, Liam might have found that 'for now' cause for worry, a reminder that Verity wasn't sticking around Fandom forever. Now, though? Now that didn't matter so much.

"Baltimore, Portland, hell, even if you wind up in, I don't know, Montana somewhere. I'm always gonna be your backup."

"Nah," Verity said. "You're always gonna be my partner."

"That does have a much nicer ring to it, I have to admit." Liam replied, grinning.
