29 Chimera Court, Wednesday Morning

When Liam had gone to sleep the night before, he'd been a child. He knew, on some level, that something had gone wrong, because his instructions from his father when he'd been born hadn't involved spending any time as a child, and yet there he was. He hadn't been overly concerned about it, in any case.

Still, when he woke up this morning and noticed that he seemed to be taller, his limbs longer... well. It was a relief.

Until he looked in the mirror and saw a face staring back at him that still seemed kind of childlike. Older, yes, but too young to infiltrate Companion Services and fulfill his destiny. That was... troubling. Perhaps human DNA interacted oddly with Kimera DNA? Liam had no idea, and it wasn't as if there was anyone around he could ask.

He figured he ought to just make the best of it, starting with finding some breakfast.

"I've never tried to cook anything," Liam admitted, with a faint smile of his own. "But don't think I would be very good at it."

"Hey, you don't know until you try, right?" Reno shrugged. "You worried you're gonna burn the place down? Most of it's just, 'take food, apply heat.'"

"I just never thought about it," Liam admitted. "None of my parents did much cooking."

"Nah, mine neither," Reno replied with a little tilt of his head. "But it's a life skill, yo. It's hard to fuck up eggs. I ain't no pro, but I can probably show you that much, if you want."

"I... okay?" Liam agreed, sounding a little bewildered.

Huh. That was an interesting reaction, there.

"Eggs, easy," Reno said again. "Just don't stick one whole in the microwave and you'll probably do fine, you'll usually end up with somethin' edible, whatever."

He paused for another moment, and then added, "Ain't too late to back out, either. But you'll have an easier time of it if you ain't waitin' for other people to feed you all the time, yo."

Yeah, sorry Liam. Apparently you'd gone from amusing to 'small Rookie who needed protection at all costs' in roughly three minutes flat.

"No, that's fine," Liam assured Reno. "I'd like to- learn something."

AWW ROOKIE, YOU JUST MADE RENO PROUD ALREADY.

"Okay," Reno said, dusting off his hands and gesturing to the fridge. "Then if Mitsy saved us any eggs, we can get right to it. And if he didn't... shit, I'll pick some up. Whatever we don't use we can just throw at people we don't like."

"I don't know anyone I don't like," Liam admitted. It helped that the majority of people he knew were the ones currently in this room.

Although, there was the issue of his father. They hadn't yet met, though, so that particular antagonistic relationship hadn't had time to blossom.

"Eeeh, give it time," Reno replied, waving a dismissive hand. "We can always settle for throwin' 'em at people who just look like they need a good egging, too."

It was really such a wonder that Reno's bosses had always despaired of him.

"How would we know?" Liam couldn't help but ask.

"You look at someone, and they rub you the wrong way, and you just know," Reno replied with a sage nod. "You say to yourself, 'now there's a douchebag who needs egg on his face,' and that's that."

He paused, and then added, "And it's probably less illegal than shovin' 'em into traffic or whatever."

"I see," Liam said, in a tone that probably betrayed the fact that he super did not.

"You will someday, Rookie," Reno said, almost actually fondly. "Someday, you'll meet that one person that sets your teeth on edge just enough for you to want to throw 'em into the sun. And when that day comes? Eggs."

Oh that definitely would describe Ronald Sandoval.

When he was back to adult-size, Liam was going to be almost disappointed that he missed out on the chance to throw eggs at his father.

"Well right now, the only people I know are here, and it wouldn't be very nice to throw eggs at any of you," Liam pointed out.

"Yeah," Reno mused, considering. "I bet half the people here would just take it as a challenge, though."

They all seemed pretty cool about that sort of thing.

"Why?"

Sorry, Reno. You were going to get that question a lot.

That was fine. It was a perfectly good question.

"Challengin' themselves is fun," Reno offered. "Keeps 'em quick, keeps 'em on their toes and ready for anything. Bonus points if they can catch the egg so they don't have to clean it later. Plenty of reasons, yo. It all depends on what people make of it."

"I don't think I have time for fun, myself," Liam said, sounding a little regretful. "But I guess that's okay for other people."

OH NO, NEW ROOKIE LIAM. DO NOT SAY THESE THINGS.

"You got time to talk about not havin' fun, you got time for fun," Reno replied, staring at the boy, just slightly scandalized. "Shit, I had one of them full-time-death-do-we-part type jobs right up until the world went to shit, and I had time for fun, yo. You gotta make your own fun, or there ain't much goddamn point to even bein' here."

Well, now Liam was even more confused. “But I know my purpose for being here,” he pointed out. “And 'fun' isn’t it.”

And now Reno was blinking and squinting a little before kind of pointing at the floor.

"Here, like, here on the island here?"

Just to be sure.

"No," Liam said, shaking his head. Because yeah, he actually didn't know why he was here and not in DC, just that every time he started to wonder why that was, something happened that seemed to distract him from really thinking about it. "But I know why I was created."

Not born.

Well. That got Reno's attention to snap to Liam like a breaking rubber band. His outward demeanor didn't change, but the Turk in his brain was on high alert, now.

They had a history, where he was from, with people who had been made instead of born.

"Oh? An' why's that?"

Well, technically speaking, he had physically been born... just in a much shorter time span than should have been possible.

"To prevent the extinction of the Taelon and Jaridian species." Which he would not be successful at, because Ha'gel's plan had not taken in to account how stubborn and prideful the remaining members of said species would be.
