Liam had made plans with Kaidan and Verity to go on something of a joyride today, so he'd shown up at the junkyard early to give himself time to do an extra-thorough pre-flight check.

The virtual glass shimmered and became permeable as the shuttle recognized his biometrics, and he sat down in the pilot's seat and brought up the HUD.

ID core, optimal; conventional drive, optimal; weapons, optimal; communications, online; backup controls, online... everything seemed to be in working order. Now he just needed his passengers.

"I hear tell it sucks to raise chickens and have them turn to stone on you because you're not paying attention," Verity said with an understanding shrug.

The more you knew!

"Unless your desired end result was some lifelike-looking chicken statues, I guess," Liam pointed out.

He very much doubted that would be the case.

"...And now I'm certain that, like, Pier One has a gorgon on their payroll somewhere making creepily realistic statuary," Verity said, making a face. "Can't unsee."

"Well," Liam said slowly. "Assuming some truth to the myths about gorgons," and yes, he might be relatively new to the cryptid world, but he'd figured out that myth didn't always reflect reality totally accurately, "Really, it's the gorgon who can't unsee something..." he pointed out.

Remember, Verity, his sense of humor was one of the things you found attractive about this man.

And, god help her, she was laughing.

Leaning in to kiss him and laughing. There was no hope for these two.

"I'm going to send that joke to Alex just as soon as we got back to Earth!"

"... Does Alex know about me? Us?" Liam couldn't help but wonder. Alex and Verity were close, he knew, but he didn't know if her romantic life had come up in their conversations.

"He calls you Officer Could-Be-Worse," Verity admitted. "Didn't like hearing you're a cop, vastly prefers that to a Covenant agent when I pointed out that without you around, I might have done something stupid, like make out with Dominic just to make a point."

Price girls were sometimes persnickety that way.

"But, yeah, the whole family knows about you. Archie ran a background check, Sarah informed everyone that your brain is weird but that you're probably not a serial killer, Antimony left me laughing voicemails for a week that I had to be rescued from a snake cult by my boyfriend..."

Liam pulled a face at the mental image of Verity making out with Dominic.

"I'm barely a cop," he muttered. Would pointing out that he was also technically ex-military make things better or worse?

A beat. "Did, uh... Artie actually find anything?" he asked, curiously. He wasn't going to touch the whole 'brain is weird' thing, not when they still had company. "Given that we come from different realities entirely..." And that if a Liam Kincaid existed in Verity's reality, chances were it would be a version of the person Liam considered the real Liam Kincaid, who had a completely different face and all.

Verity had deliberately phrased the 'brain is weird' thing to sound kinda twee, just in case Kaidan asked about it.

"Yup," she said with a nod. "Artie was just like, 'So, this is bullshit, but fucked if I know what is behind the bullshit.' And then I told him that I did and Artie just shrugged and asked if he could go back to reading comics now. I don't know if my Mom was more disappointed or impressed by that response."

Verity's family was weird.

Not that Liam would know from normal families, of course.

"So long as there's at least a chance of me making a positive first impression whenever I meet anyone other than Sarah in person, I guess," he said.

"You're forgetting one thing, babe," Verity said with a grin. "Not only did you save their daughter, but you helped find a dragon."

One would weigh more heavily on them than the other, but it was even odds which one it was.

"Also pretty obviously head-over-heels for you," Liam felt he had to add. "But it's good to know I have a couple of aces in the hole, too."

Honestly, that helped? But head-over-heels came in after things like ability to hold his own in a fight, understanding the importance of secrecy, and not being an idiot. Love was good, but only when it didn't put the family at risk.

"Point out the number of times your - " her eyes darted towards Kaidan " - expert medical cares helped me out and you'll be golden."

True, but still. Given all that other stuff, 'in this for the long haul' probably ranked somewhat higher than 'just here for a good time'.

"I am a great field medic," he agreed easily.

That was true enough.

"You think I should point out how it's a great way to get your hands all over me?"

"No," Liam said quickly. "Because I like my hands and am interested in keeping them."

"But it is a great way to get them all over me," Verity said. "You'd just be being honest!"

Not that Verity was in any more of a hurry to bring up their sex life to her family than he was.

"You," Liam said emphatically, shaking his head, "are an absolute menace. Just so you know."

"It's why you like me," Verity said, then leaned in to whisper something in his ear about going purple out among the stars sometime.

"You're not wrong," Liam grinned.

And if there was a slight blueish tinge for a moment to the blush that crept across his features at that whispered suggestion, surely it was just a trick of the light being cast from the HUD. Right? Right.

Of course right.

"You know," she said, leaning back in her chair with a small, satisfied smile. "Later. To celebrate teaching me to pilot or something."

"Or something," Liam echoed, with a smile of his own. "It's a date."

"Maybe we'll actually get to the activity part of this date, even," she teased.

Doubtful, but, you know. It was good to have goals.

"I suppose that depends on how serious you are about learning to fly," Liam teased back.

Either outcome was fine by him, but if she genuinely wanted to learn to pilot the shuttle, he could manage to keep his hands to himself long enough for her to do so.

"Oh, I'm serious about learning," Verity assured him. "I'm just also okay if it takes a few more lessons than would otherwise be necessary." Her fingers twined with his and she brought his knuckles up to her lips. "But I really do wanna fly."
