MHA #6, Sunday Morning

Over the last few months, Liam had fallen back on a number of old habits, including the one where he only bothered with sleeping the few hours a night that his body required. Instead, he kept busy doing other things, including regular runs around the island. He was on his way back to the apartment for a shower after one such run just now, as a matter of fact.

After that (and making sure the mice- and squirrel!Verity- had breakfast), it was probably tea and a breakfast sandwich at the Perk. What an exciting life he led.

Hey, it didn't have to be written by an overdramatic Victorian to count as poetry!

"I'm suddenly feeling very overdressed," he admitted.

"Oh. Right." Verity did not seem over fussed about her state of undress. "Is that your way of hinting something?" she teased.

Like this was the first time she'd been naked in the kitchen?

"Do you want it to be?"

She was the one who'd just been de-squirreled, he was more than happy to let her take the lead here.

... Okay, he was more than happy to let her take the lead almost all of the time, shh.

"I think I need a shower first," Verity said. "And to brush my teeth."

It. Had. Been. Months.

Ugh, now that she was thinking about it, her scalp itched.

"I could wash your hair for you?" Liam asked, hope tinging his voice. Could she blame him for feeling just a little clingy?

"I'll let you handle your teeth on your own, though."

"Yes," Verity agreed immediately. "Yes, you should absolutely do that. It's vital to my post-squirreling process."

"Come on then, love," Liam said, tugging her in the direction of the bathroom. "Let's get you freshened up."

Their path from the kitchen to the bathroom, coincidentally, took them past the bedroom that hadn't been there a month ago. Liam wasn't sure if Verity had really noticed its sudden appearance while she'd been all squirrely, but he doubted it'd escape her notice now.

"...Soooooooooooooooooo," Verity said, all casual. "I can't help but notice our layout changed."

"Hm?" Liam said innocently. "Right. Well, it's just, you know," he scrubbed at the back of his neck with the hand that wasn't clutching Verity's. "An opportunity came up, and it just seemed... prudent? For, uh. If there's more than just the two of us and the mice."

Especially since thanks to the magic of whatever the hell that particular week had been, the extra room added space to the interior of the apartment without actually modifying how much of the floor they occupied.

Verity looked up at him with a small smile. "Just in case, huh?" she asked.

Liam nodded, the fingers twined with hers squeezing a bit harder for a moment. “Street hasn’t found anything yet. But she’s still looking. I want to be ready.”

He was smiling back at her, but there was something serious in his eyes too. He wanted this- the two of them starting their own family- so much.

"We will be," Verity promised. "We absolutely will be."

They already loved him and that was most of it, right? Everything else was just details.

...And weapons.

Love and weapons saw them through a hell of a lot, so far, it was true.

"But first," he said. "Shower. And then breakfast, your birthday presents, sex... the order of everything after the shower is entirely negotiable."

Verity pauses. Slaps her forehead. "I missed your birthday!" she wails.

"Yup," Liam confirmed. Had he been a little disappointed at the time? Maybe. But that had been over a month ago. "Not like you could help it," he said gently.

"But I still missed it!" Verity said, spinning around to hug him again.

She was a lot more concerned about that than missing her own, truth be told.

“Hey,” Liam said. “It’s okay. It’s just a day. Not like I won’t have another one next year...”

He was leaning in to that hug like whoa though, because one of the things he’d really missed? Was that casual human contact she offered him so freely.

"We're going to have makeup birthdays," Verity decided. "Because this is ridiculous."

“Makeup birthdays, huh? I can get behind that,” Liam decided. “Just the two of us, or should we invite Dominic? And does that mean you want to hold off on opening your presents?”

"Two makeup birthdays," Verity amended. "Or maybe even three, for a party. And yes, holding off until I get you presents at the very least."

She'd intended to! But then she'd been a squirrel!

Engaging in capitalism as a squirrel was difficult! Unless you were after rum. Or notepads and pencils.

Liam couldn’t help but brighten visibly at the mention of a party. For all his broody exterior, he really was something of a social creature at heart.

“It’s a deal,” he said, placing a kiss on her forehead before backing away to start getting undressed.

Verity was watching avidly and not even pretending otherwise.

Because you know what else was impossible to get as a squirrel?

Laid.

“Like what you see?” Liam teased, like he hadn’t been looking her over appreciatively immediately after making sure she was in fact really back.

"Always," Verity sighed, giving him bedroom eyes. "Entirely."
